Report on Dresden from our Russian trainee Olga

Why to do a traineeship in Dresden, Germany?

First of all, we have very interesting job offers here in Dresden. There are about 800 enterprises located in and around Dresden among them famous names like Siemens AG, Motorola, Vodafone, Volkswagen AG, Advanced Micro Devices, Asta Medica and Deutsche Aerospace Airbus. Many associate Dresden as one of the most modern high-tech locations in Europe, with particular emphasis on microelectrotechnics, information and communication technologies, biotechnology and manufacturing of new materials. Dresden offers favourable conditions for innovation and development. About 33 000 students study in Dresden University of Technology where many exchange interns do their research. Concerning all this a traineeship here may be as interesting as beneficial in terms of gaining new experience in any field of technics you will choose.

Second, you will definitely go through making friends from all over the world, sharing and exchanging cultures. That`s the most exciting thing of all. You may meet people from every continent and find so much in common to your surprise. IAESTE will help you to meet new friends organising events and parties. Barbeque is a very german tradition where normally they grill famous german sausages and drink even more famous german beer. You will not get bored and stay alone for sure!

The third reason is the city itself. Dresden is one of Germany`s cultural-historical highlights. In the year 2006 the city will celebrate its 800th anniversary. Can you imagine how many opportunities for a tourist you may find here and what a great history the city has?

Dresden is called - Elbe Florence. Here you can see famous buildings like Bruehlterasse - the Balcony of Europe, Semper Opera House - the most beautiful of its kind in Germany, Zwinger with the Crown Gate and a gallery containing four museums providing us with wonderful collections of paintings by the Old Masters, porcellain, weapons and technical devices. Nowhere else in the world you will have a chance to admire such a masterpiece as the Sistine Madonna by Raphael (Rafaello Sanzio) which can be found in the residental castle of Dresden.

There is so much to visit in Dresden surroundings: Meissen, Moritzburg, Swiss Saxony, three castles by the river Elbe, Japanese Palace in Dresden, Pillnitz Castle...You will be pretty surprised that to get to some of them is so easy.

On the one hand it s great that Dresden is located at the river Elbe, you may take a boat trip or a canoe to enjoy the views of beatiful nature along the banks of the river, see the castles and Blue Wonder, the suspension bridge built in 1891/93 as a technical masterpiece of its time. On the other hand it may turn to a catastrophe - to a flood, as it happened in 2002. It damaged Old City Center, first floors of Semper Oper House and Zwinger were under water. Now that Flood became a part of the history as well as the bombing raid on Dresden in February 1945. Although it destroyed the citycenter and the most important, the cathedral, the Frauenkirche, now it has been fully restored.

Entertainment in Dresden is worth mentioning, There is a part of the city called Neustadt (New City) where you may hang around with friends and meet many young people. Clubbing, bowling, swimming, theaters, museums, libraries, shopping, sports...whatever you want to give a try you will find here. Grosser Garten is the place to relax and do outdoor sports.

And the last but not least, the location of Dresden in the middle of Europe makes it so easy to travel. It is situated in the south-eastern part of the Free State of Saxony, which borders not only on other German regions (Bavaria, Thuringia, Saxony-Anhalt and Brandenburg), but also on the Czech Republic and Poland. You may go to Vienna or visit Prague, Amsterdam or Budapest...IAESTE will help you to organise the trip or at least help you to find with whom to go and have fun.

Just to give you an idea of how big is Dresden, some statistic facts. In terms of area Dresden holds 4th position among the cities of the Federal Republic of Germany after Berlin, Hamburg and Cologne. Its territory is 328,5 km² population consists of 507 691 people (15th place among german cities) of which 3% are foreigners. Dresden is the capital of the Free State of Saxony. With 62% of its area devoted to woods and green spaces, Dresden can be considered one of the greenest cities in Europe. Dresden attracts visitors from all over the world. Countless day tourists seek a taste of Saxon history and allow themselves to become enchanted by the cultural atmosphere of the city. A particular point of attention of around 7 million visitors each year is the Frauenkirche Church. Dresden unites cultural and art treasures of European renown.
